Satin or silk pillowcase: what the difference actually is
Updated September 29, 2026 · CMAC Beauty
Silk is a natural protein fibre; satin is a weave, usually made of polyester. Both give hair and skin a smoother surface than cotton, which many people notice as less morning frizz. Silk feels cooler and costs several times more; polyester satin costs a fraction, goes in the washing machine and lasts well. Ours is polyester satin at $9.99, and we call it satin, not silk.
Half the listings you'll see say “silky”, “silk-feel” or “satin silk”, and that is not an accident. Here is how to tell what you are actually buying, and which one is worth it for you.
Satin and silk side by side
| Satin (polyester) | Silk (mulberry) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A smooth, shiny weave; the fibre is usually polyester | A natural protein fibre from silkworm cocoons |
| Feel | Smooth and slippery, slightly warmer | Smooth, cooler, breathes a little better |
| Care | Machine wash, dries fast, forgiving | Cold hand or delicate wash, mild detergent, no heat |
| Price | Low: our satin pillowcase is $9.99 | Several times the price of satin |
| Who it suits | Most people, and anyone who wants to try before spending more | People who run hot at night, or want the natural fibre |
What “momme” means
Momme is the weight of silk fabric. Pillowcases are commonly 19 to 25 momme; a higher number means a denser, more durable fabric and a higher price. Polyester satin has no momme rating, so a “22 momme satin” listing is mixing two things up.
How to tell what you're buying
- “Satin” on a label describes the weave, not the fibre. Look for the fibre content: 100% polyester or 100% mulberry silk.
- “Silky”, “silk-feel” and “silk touch” mean it is not silk.
- In Canada, textiles must show their fibre content on the label. If a product won't tell you what it is made of, move on.
- Real silk at a satin price is a red flag, not a bargain.
Keeping it smooth
- Satin: wash cold with like colours, skip fabric softener, low heat or hang to dry.
- Silk: cold hand wash or a delicate cycle in a mesh bag, a detergent made for silk, dry flat away from the sun.
- Either one: pairing it with a satin bonnet or a scrunchie instead of a tight elastic does more for morning hair than any single product.
Frequently asked
- Does a satin pillowcase prevent wrinkles?
- No pillowcase changes wrinkles. Sleep creases on waking are temporary; a smoother surface may leave fewer of them, and that is the honest extent of it.
- Is satin good for curly or textured hair?
- Many people with curly or textured hair use satin for exactly this reason, often together with a satin bonnet, because a smooth surface drags less on the hair overnight.
- Why is your satin pillowcase only $9.99?
- Because it is polyester satin, sold without a marketplace commission, and shipping is charged separately. It is not silk, and it is not priced as if it were.
