Keeping a gel manicure looking fresh between appointments
Updated September 29, 2026 · CMAC Beauty
A gel manicure typically looks its best for two to three weeks. What makes it last is simple: gloves for dishes and cleaning products, hand cream or cuticle oil every day, never peeling a lifting edge, and filing natural nails in one direction only. Tidy natural nails at home; leave gel repairs and removal to your technician. Our Between Appointments kit is $54.99.
Most gel manicures don't fail at the salon. They fail at the sink, on a stubborn lid or when a lifting corner gets picked at on the couch. Here is what helps, what to do yourself, and what to leave for your next appointment.
What actually makes it last
- Gloves for dishwater and cleaning products. Hot water and detergent are what loosen gel at the edges.
- Hand cream or cuticle oil every day, on the cuticles as much as the hands.
- Nails are not tools: no opening cans or scraping labels.
- Never peel a lifting edge. Gel that comes off in one piece takes the top layer of the natural nail with it.
- File in one direction, from the side toward the centre. Back-and-forth filing frays the edge.
At home, or at the studio?
| Task | At home | Leave to your technician |
|---|---|---|
| Shape natural nails | Glass nail file ($12.99), or the 5-in-1 nail pen ($29.99) on bare natural nails | — |
| Tidy cuticles | Push them back after a shower; nip only loose skin (Cuticle Care Duo, $14.99) | Full cuticle work |
| A lifting gel edge | Keep it dry, don't peel it, book a fill | Repair or fill |
| Removing gel | Never by prying or hard filing | Proper removal |
| Doing your own gel | USB UV/LED lamp ($24.99): thin coats, 30 to 60 seconds per coat | — |
Under the lamp
Many people prefer to keep the backs of their hands covered while gel cures. Our cover gloves ($8.99) are fabric covers with open fingertips, so the technician works as usual. They are a cover, not a sunscreen.
Frequently asked
- How often can I use the nail care pen?
- Once a week is plenty, on clean, bare natural nails, at the lower speed.
- Can I file my gel with it?
- No. Leave gel and builder gel to your technician; the pen is for natural nails between visits.
- Is a USB lamp as good as a salon lamp?
- It is a compact 24-bead lamp for touch-ups and home gel; salon lamps are larger. Follow the curing time on your polish, usually 30 to 60 seconds per coat.
